ShayShays Music & Me

Hello! :) My name is Nashayla. I’m 20 and this is my third year at converse. I am a Student Athlete who studies business and is a part of the Track & Field team here on campus. I am studying business in hopes of owning my own veterinarian practice, whether that may be just for shots, grooming & bathing, pet hotel services, or a technicians site. Since I was a child, I've always felt a strong connection with animals both small and large. I live with my two fur babies, Tucker and Greigh. Although I grew up in Columbia, SC, I now live here in the Spartanburg area, but I’ve also lived many different places such as Fort Mill, California, and Georgia.

I decided to join this class because of my love for and diverse taste in music. I often find myself watching videos of people singing, or listening to music most people don’t listen to. I have a small background in music as I was a soprano one throughout middle and high school choir and also sang in the choir at church. My favorite genre of music right now has to be R&B, but I can also enjoy rap as long as there is power in the lyrics . I listen to many different artist such as J. Cole, Brent Faiyaz, Lucky Daye, Kendrick, Daniel Caesar and Jhene Aiko. While I stated that R&B is my favorite genre, I think it is the older generation full of artist just as John mayor, Marvin Gaye, The Gap Band, Tyrese, and Jasmine Sullivan, I love the most.

I also enjoy lots of Caribbean/ Afro Beats type music, due to my Jamaican Background. Although I have no Hispanic background, I enjoy their music as well. So, if you ever get into my car you will hear lots of cultural music as well.

When I think of music that means the most to me, two songs come to mind . The songs Keep you Satisfied by Marvin Gaye and ROS by Mac Miller are a very close tie as they both take me back to my happiest times in life. When I think of those songs,  I relive core memories and the levels of dopamine in my body rapidly rise. I associate both of these songs with people that I have cared deeply for in my life.   ROS - Mac Miller

One genre of music I can absolutely not do is Alternative / Scream Metal Music. The very loud screaming, disoriented beats, and sound of chaos make my head pound and do not allow room for me to think or focus. My sister would listen to this kind of music growing up and I hated every second of listening to it.

  1. Your mention of liking Hispanic music despite not having any real background with it connects with me, because while it is not my go-to, I have friends who play Hispanic music frequently and I enjoy it. I also have to agree on not liking scream metal, I can't help but laugh when I hear it because it's very strange to me.

  2. I liked getting to know this side of you and how you introduced me to a part of you that I can relate to- Some of Mac Millers songs are also a part of the happier parts of my life where I learned a lot about myself. Sidenote- I am a fan of the alt/screamo music from time to time, def making you listen to some when you're in my car next

  3. I love your diversity in music. Everytime I listen to a Jamaican song it makes me want to get up and dance and that’s exactly what I did when I played that song you shared. I see we do have a similar music taste based on the R&B artists you shared. I absolutely love Jhene Aiko, she's definitely a go-to for me everytime I’m in my R&B mood. I also love Jasmine Sullivan as well.

  5. I like that your tastes in music are so diverse. I’m a Latina and I’m used to listening to music in Spanish but this year I want to open my mind to new genres and styles of music. I really liked the Caribbean song and I actually think this is a type of music I would be able to connect with. About the Scream Metal Music I also have a hard time connecting with this music, the screaming and the sounds are just not attractive to me.

  7. I enjoy Marvin Gaye also and that is an amazing song by him. I have been wanting to get into Mac Miller but didn't know what song to start with. I don't know if it represented him well but it was a great song a further piqued my interest.
