Women in Music
Since the beginning of time women have been told to remain classy. With this being said women have always been expected to sing, as rap was not lady like. Almost every woman that rap in today's age is heavily judged. They are either told that it does not sound good or that they all talk about the same thing and not real issues, when in reality they are rapping about the same thing as today's men. As many artists such as Cardi B, Nicki Minaj and Megan The Stallion have come to the surface, there has been nothing but gossip, judgement and bad mouthing.
While many men may say all females just rap about their sexual capabilities and goodness, many of these songs are doing a lot to make women feel positive about themselves as they may feel as though they can relate. When the song lyrics say thing such as “ my a** fat”, or “i’m the baddest”, it does a lot to boost the confidence of those who are singing the song, especially those who may have a low self of steam. For example, when women are sad they may use these songs to hype themselves up or when getting ready to go out with their girls they may use this as a get in the mood get ready for a fun night song. While this is what many females rap about, this is not always the case. Some songs are simply about heartbreak and being in love, like softer music, just in the form of rap.
Likewise, many women in are expected to listen to softer, love song type music, such as R&B. Our generation tends to look at women who listen heavily to rap music as manly or hood, and sometimes even promiscuous, simply because they enjoy a particular type of music. While these things are not always true it has become a heavy stereotype in todays age.
Hey Nashayla! I liked the way you started off your blog by saying people expect women to be classy. This is mainly what I talked about in my blog but did not know exactly how to put it. Growing up in a very conservative, Christian family, it was very looked down upon when I would listen to any sort of rap music whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog. I really liked how you started off by saying women are always supposed to be classy. I feel as a woman we should be able to express and say what we want because it is perfectly acceptable if a man did it.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog and agree with all the points you had to make. I agree with how there is this box that society wants to keep women in; we have to be quiet, we can't be opinionated, be classy, the list goes on. Seeing women artists break those gender norms is inspirational. I also like how you said that a lot of the times women artists, rappers specifically, have lyrics that make you feel good singing along to, so it's upsetting when they get backlash from it when the men seem to not.
ReplyDeleteHey Nashayla, I first off will like to say that I really enjoyed reading you blog. I love how you made the point that it doesn't matter what gender you are you have the right to be yourself in the music industry everyone has there own personality.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Nashayla! I really enjoyed your blog. I am sure that many women can relate to it. I really enjoyed the music in this blog too!
